Mala is a word in Sanskrit which means "garland". It is a string of beads made of wood, seeds or gemstones which are strung on rope. These sting of beads consist of about 108 beads or any factor of 108, which may or may not include a guru bead.

Since ancient times, people used Malas to keep the mind focused and clear of thoughts during meditation. Likewise, people use them to keep count of mantra recitations. As well as for doing yoga, praying and reflecting. At the same time, people wear them as a reminder of their intentions.
